Tropical update: Henri downgraded to a tropical storm as it nears landfall

HOUSTON — The KHOU 11 Weather team and National Hurricane Center is tracking a system in the tropics right now — Tropical Storm Henri.

Henri has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm Henri as it nears landfall. 

The storm’s winds are near 75 mph. Henri is expected to make landfall in Long Island or southern New England Sunday morning or early afternoon, according to NHC.

Little change in strength is expected Sunday morning, and Henri is forecast to be at or near hurricane strength when it reaches the coasts of southern New England and Long Island.  

Rapid weakening is expected after Henri makes landfall.

Henri is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches over portions of Long Island, New England, southeast New York, New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania today into Monday, with isolated maximum totals near 10 inches

A tornado or two may occur Sunday over southern New England.
