As a cold front approaches the Charlotte area, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop, which could lead to strong to severe storms.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A cold front approaching the Carolinas Wednesday could lead to strong to severe storms.

Rainstorms covered the northern part of Charlotte in the early part of the morning, but that was only round one of this system. As the afternoon progresses, plenty of sunshine and daytime heating will prompt instability in the atmosphere.

The highest likelihood for rain and storms will be in the afternoon, mainly after 3 p.m. These chances will remain scattered throughout the early evening. The primary threat will be spotty damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph. These could be especially impactful toward our mountain regions.

An isolated thunderstorm could linger through midnight, but activity won’t be as widespread.

The secondary threat will be pockets of heavy rain leading to potential flooding, especially in flood-prone regions.

In a few areas, we could also see pea- to nickel-sized hail. The threat for tornadoes is low, but not zero, so don’t let your guard down.
