Storm chaser captures video of ‘monster’ tornado in West Texas
Storms rolled into San Antonio and most of Texas on Monday, May 23, as a cold front blew its way into the Lone Star State. The severe storms also brought what weather officials are calling a super tornado to Morton, a small town west of Lubbock, and one storm chaser caught it on camera.
The storm chaser, Chad Casey, tweeted video of an “absolute monster” of a tornado touching down in Morton. The video shows the massive tornado from Casey’s dashcam roll across the North Texas off of N. State Highway 214.
The super tornado kicked up a massive plume of dust that caught the attention of other drivers, who you can see stopped on the side of the highway to capture it on camera. One group even decided that it was a perfect opportunity for a selfie with the “monster” tornado.
The National Weather Service released a warning message saying “Take cover now! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building,” after the videos and photos blew up on social media. NWS’ warnings map also has the tornado reports marked over Morton.
No injuries were reported from the tornado, and the Lubbock-area NWS office later thanked everyone who posted video and photos of the tornado on Twitter.
“The information was and is always extremely helpful for our warning operations and decisions,” the tweet read.
