Storms move out of the area, severe weather risk Sunday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — We’ll have a brief period of dry weather on Saturday and it’ll be the best day to get outside and enjoy it and stop by the ABC11 tent at the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival.

First Alert Day: Another storm system is expected to bring locally heavy rain Sunday, along with a level 1 risk for severe thunderstorms.

A new low-pressure system is poised to move across the Southeast on Saturday and then lift northward along the Atlantic Seaboard on Sunday, intensifying in the process as it is aided by strong jet dynamics. This storm will return rain and thunderstorm to our region late Saturday night, which will then continue through Sunday.

Downpours will definitely be a concern with localized flooding possible. With the forecast track of the low to our west, we can also break out into the warm sector and have thunderstorms turn locally damaging.

Drier, cooler air will sweep in Sunday night and last through the first half of next week, with temperatures 10-15 degrees lower than the historical averages Monday through Wednesday. It remains dry that whole timeframe though, and then we’ll start the slow rebound in temperatures during the latter part of next week.

Friday’s First Alert Day produced heavy rains and hail in some areas of the ABC11 viewing area, especially in the evening hours. There have been no reports of storm damage or weather-related injuries.
