BURGAW, NC (WWAY) – Pender Memorial Hospital is back open for the first time since before Hurricane Florence hit.

For the safety of the community, patients and staff, Pender Memorial Hospital closed starting at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 12, ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence, according to a news release.

While the hospital and its emergency room were closed, Atrium Health brought MED-1, a fully operational mobile hospital, to Burgaw to provide residents access to care until Pender Memorial could safely reopen. A woman even gave birth during the hurricane at MED-1.

NHRMC’s Emergency Department on South 17th Street in Wilmington was also open to patients.

“We are excited to be open for business and look forward to seeing patients,” PMH President Ruth Glaser said in a release. “We are grateful to the Med 1 team for partnering with us to continue offering hospital care to the community in the wake of this serious storm.”

MED-1 is scheduled to leave Burgaw Wednesday.
