Parts of North Carolina are watching for the possibility of flooding from Hurricane Idalia.

An inch of water damage can cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair, so taking preventive measures is key.

Preparations vary based on location, but it’s smart for anyone to be ready to file an insurance claim in case of flood damage. It means taking pictures and doing an inventory of valuables.

Having old towels handy can help keep water form getting in under doors. It can help prevent water damage to drywall and carpet.

WRAL 5 On Your Side also recommends having your insurance agent’s number saved in case there is damage.

“Give them a call and start that process of getting somebody out to check it,” said IBHS Research Center Dr. Ian Giammanco. “A lot of times they have preferred contractor networks and even services to help quickly deal with damage to your roof to prevent any more water from getting in.”

After the storm, be careful of anyone who shows up offering to do tree or repair work.

Also, check references and licenses of anyone you’re planning to hire before you pay.
