By the numbers: Hurricane Florence breaks several records

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –

The National Weather Service in Wilmington released its preliminary post-Hurricane Florence report on Tuesday, and the water level numbers are staggering.

Some of the Cape Fear River stages results are still developing for inland New Hanover County, but during Florence’s storm surge, the highest stage was 8.27 feet. That beat records set by Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

In Bladen County, the Cape Fear crested to six feet higher than Matthew, setting a new record.

The Black River in Pender County crested about one foot higher in Currie than it did during Matthew.

In inland Pender, the northeast Cape Fear reached 25.58 feet on Sept. 19 at Burgaw, exceeding the previous record set by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 by three feet.
