H2GO: 228,000 gallons of sewage spilled in flood-ravaged neighborhood during Florence

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — H2GO says nearly a quarter million gallons of sewage spilled during the height of Hurricane Florence when a pump failed in a neighborhood devastated by flooding from the storm.
According to a news release the H2GOpump station in Stoney Creek Plantation was completely submerged in floodwaters during the storm conditions. H2GO says the pump controls and diesel-powered backup generator failed. That led to 228,000 gallons of untreated sewage mixing with floodwaters during the peak of the storm.

Extreme flooding destroyed several homes in Stoney Creek.
H2GO says as soon as flooding receded on September 19 H2GO staff restored operations with a temporary diesel-powered bypass pump.
H2GO says it reported the overflow to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality on September 17. The utility, which provides water and sewer service to much of northern Brunswick County, says it is working on a complete pump station rebuild of controls and backup generator.
